Beauty Tutorial: The Cat Eye
The punk look is huge for winter in both fashion and beauty, from tons of leather and tartan to intense rock 'n roll eyes. We got make-up artist Renee De Wit to give us her top tips for creating this high voltage, punk-inspired cat's eye.
Follow Renee's step-by-step tutorial below to get the look yourself.
Step 1: Prime Your Eyes
When doing a very dark, intense eye, it's best to start with the eyes so that if any product lands under the eye it's easy to clean up. Start by applying Smashbox lid primer all over the eyelids. This will keep your eye make up in place.
Step 2: Define The Brows
Bold brows are as integral to these look as the actual cat's eye - strong brows open the face and give an instant lift!
Define the eyebrows with Smashbox's Brow Tech wand. Then set eyebrows with clear brow set or spray a little hairspray onto brush and comb your brows into shape.
Step 3: Create The Cat Eye
To find the perfect angle of the eyeliner use the handle of an eye shadow brush and place it along the bottom lash line. Now dot a little eye shadow along the brush base.
Using your liquid liner of choice, draw a fine line along the lash line in a sweeping motion toward the outer corner of the eye. Make sure to follow the natural flick of your eyelashes and mark the point with a dot. It's best to do this when your eye is slightly open as your eye shape changes when closed. Now create a winged shape connecting the inner corner of your eye with the end of your cat eye shape. Fill in with liquid eyeliner.
TOP TIP: Use an ear bud dipped into eye make up remover to correct any mistakes.
Step 4: Apply Mascara
Curl the lashes and add two layers of black mascara using a zig zag motion. Don't be shy with your mascara - it finishes the look.
TOP TIP: Use the eyelash applicator to hold your eyelid in place while you're applying it, as it prevents mascara ending up on the lids.
Step 5: Prime Your Skin
Prime the skin with Woolworths Smoothing Primer using a synthetic foundation brush.
TOP TIP: Synthetic brushes are ideal for applying liquid-based products.
Step 6: Apply Foundation & Concealer
Blot with tissue then add Clarins foundation with a stipple brush in circular motions to create and airbrushed finish. Next, conceal under the eyes using a BB cream. Finish up by concealing any blemishes using a Woolworths Concealer Stick.
Step 7: Highlight
Using a sponge, dust Smashbox's fabulous Halo Highlighting Wand along the nose, cheekbones and cupids bow to create an overall airbrushed effect.
Step 8: Lips & Cheeks
Smile and add Stila convertible blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend outward. Then dab a little colour on your lips and line lips with a nude liner to ensure lipstick lasts longer.
Add a touch of Woolworths Lip Gloss in Sweet Pea to the bottom lip to create volume.
TOP TIP: To prolong blusher, try layering a cream blush and a powder blush.
Step 9: Finishing Touches
Set your make up with Woolworths loose powder and then contour the cheeks, and the temples lightly with a matte bronzer, like Smashbox's Halo Bronzer.
TOP TIP: To modernise your make up routine invest in a mineral highlighter that is not too sparkly.
