Six South African Wines to Celebrate

This Heritage Month, we share an exceptional selection from some of the country’s best winemakers. 

Extraordinary local wines are nothing new – after all, most of the bottles you’ll read about here and find on Woolworths shelves come from SA’s best-loved vineyards. So, what makes these six so special? It’s a combination of their rich history and the fact that they’re simply delectable. Raise a glass to the good fortune of living in a country that does wine exceptionally well!

  • Villiera Brut Natural Blanc de Blanc No Sulphur Added Méthode Cap Classique 2014

    Made in SA by... 
    The Grier family of Villiera in Stellenbosch who’ve been making MCCs for 35 years and supplying Woolworths since our wine department opened in 1987.

    Best bits​... 
    No residual sugar is added at bottling and no sulphur dioxide is added in the winemaking of the Brut Natural. It’s also suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

    Tastes a little like… 
    A burst of toast and white fruits in a pleasantly effervescent form, of course!

     

  • Ken Forrester Chenin Blanc 2018

    Ken Forrester, who is celebrating 25 years of making delicious Chenin Blanc. 

    Best bits​...
    South Africa can be proud of the fact that we’re responsible for 53% of the world’s Chenin Blanc production, thanks in part to the fact that Ken Forrester was one of the first to realise the varietal’s true potential.

    Tastes a little like… 
    Apricot, peach and lime, complemented by vanilla wood spice.

  • Simonsig Chenin Blanc Pinotage 2018

    Made in SA by… 
    Simonsig’s Frans Malan – a visionary, whose legacy continues with two of his sons and three grandchildren working on the family farm.

    Best bits...
    It’s a ground-breaking blend of two of SA’s favourite cultivars.

    Tastes a little like… 
    melon and tropical fruit thanks to the 70% Chenin Blanc, while the Pinotage brings hints of plum and red berry.

  • La Motte Merlot 2017

    Made in SA by… 
    La Motte, which is owned by Hanneli Rupert-Koegelenberg and has been a Woolworths wine supply partner since 1990.

    Best bits​...
    This Merlot closely followed La Motte’s Grand Rouge onto Woolworths shelves, and both are still bestsellers.

    Tastes a little like… 
    Red fruits: think flavours of redcurrants, plums and cherries, supported by an oak spiciness.

  • Thelema Sutherland Cool Climate Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

    Made in SA by… 
    Gyles Webb, perhaps best-known for his Sauvignon Blanc that was specifically requested to be served during an official visit to the country by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

    The clue’s in the name: this wine is part of the series that makes the most of the Elgin region’s cool coastal climate. 

    Tastes a little like… 
    Ripe blackcurrant fruit, hints of chocolate with a velvety palate.
