Icons for making better food choices

We consistently engage our seafood supply chains to confirm adherence to our responsible seafood procurement policies and to confirm alignment to the Fishing for the Future goals. This includes a review of seafood certification scheme audits and surveillance reports; NGO seafood ratings guidelines; improvement project progress and various seafood benchmarking indices. The above-mentioned seafood sustainability assurance programmes and guides are comprehensive and measure sustainability performance against hundreds of auditing criteria. The icons included with our species descriptions highlight just some of the key sustainability attributes of the fish species we sell and the fisheries and fish farms from which we source our seafood. We hope these icons will guide you towards choosing seafood produced with sustainability in mind!

OUR ICONS YOU'LL SEE EVERYWHERE

The Fishing for the Future logo is our guarantee that every seafood product we sell meets globally recognised sustainability criteria. Our wild caught and farmed fish icons enhance transparency in our seafood supply chains. As one of the world's most responsible retailers, we work together with leading sustainable seafood movement NGOs towards seafood with greater sustainability. That's the Woolworths Difference.

  • FISHING FOR THE FUTURE

Fishing for the Future, our dedicated seafood sustainability programme, ensures that all our seafood is responsibly sourced for better food choices, thriving communities and healthy oceans.

  • WILD CAUGHT

We source wild caught seafood from well-managed capture fisheries that are not engaged in overfishing and that minimises negative impacts on other species and ecosystems.

  • FARMED FISH

Fish farming, or aquaculture, has been practised for millennia and now supplies more than 50% of all seafood for human consumption. The modern fish farm is a knowledge-based enterprise operating within strict standards and best management practices frameworks.

  • NGO COLLABORATION

We work together with several NGOs to adopt innovative new technologies, solutions and thinking around seafood sustainability and to continuously improve sustainability outcomes across our seafood supply chains

  • SMALL SCALE FISHERY

Woolworths supports the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14.b which calls for providing ‘access for small-scale fishers to marine resources and markets’ by 2030.

  • SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATION

Independently certified as sustainable by a certification scheme that has been benchmarked and recognised by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI).

  • NO ROUTINE ANTIBIOTICS

Sourced from farms where the routine use of antibiotics is not allowed and their therapeutic use is prescribed by a science-based determination, with conformance confirmed through audits against applicable standards.

  • IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

Woolworths supports multi-stakeholder initiatives that aim to help fisheries work towards greater sustainability by improving fishing practices and management.

  • FOOD SAFETY ENSURED

Every batch of seafood Woolworths sources undergoes rigorous food safety testing, including testing for dioxins, heavy metals and pesticides in accordance with international food safety limits.

  • BEST PRACTICES BYCATCH

Bycatch sourced from a well-managed fishery that proactively reduces its catches of non-target species through technological improvements and other management measures.

  • FULL TRACEABILITY

Woolworths fully traces all its seafood back to the point of origin to ensure food safety, to prove legality and to verify environmental and ethical sustainability claims.

  • SUSTAINABLE FEED

Fed with a species-specific formulated compound feed containing a balanced mixture of responsibly sourced fish- and plant-based raw materials to achieve optimum nutritional value and feed conversion.

  • FISH HEALTH AND WELFARE

Sourced from farms that have implemented fish health management plans; strict requirements to regularly monitor and maintain water quality; and maximum stocking density requirements.

  • NOT OVERFISHED

Sourced from a fishery where the fishing effort is not excessive in relation to the stock's abundance and rate of reproduction i.e., fishing mortality is lower than the maximum sustainable yield.

  • LOW CARBON FOOTPRINT

Contributes to a climate friendly diet with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions and sourced from producers that have set near term and /or net zero emissions reduction targets.

  • HIGH IN OMEGA-3

While all fish are excellent high-quality protein options, those with the highest amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids are packed with the most overall health benefits.
