Tips for Dads

From age 3, kids become aware of daily routine. This gives the men in their lives yet another important role to play: to be consistent. A consistent father figure makes a child feel secure, which helps build self-esteem. In the case of divorce or separation, dad should stay as consistent and predictable as possible by phoning and sticking to regular visits at set times.

Young kids gain a lot from the rough-and-tumble games that come naturally to men. If you’re a single mom, enlist a close male friend or family member to take on this role. Playing adventurously with a child stimulates muscle strength, coordination, confidence and willingness to take risks. Physical play also adds something very important: fun. Good family life is all about atmosphere: we forget details and events but never the atmosphere we grew up in.

Helping With Chores

Allow your child to help you with chores such as sweeping or shaving – give her a little brush to help you sweep or let her put foam on your face before you shave.
