6 local gins we love

Gin has come a long way since its medicinal origins in the Middle Ages. It’s now a favourite for many G&T purists and mixologists alike. We’ve picked out our favourite South African-made gins – get ready to upgrade your drinks trolley.
  • Hope on Hopkins

Made in a small distillery in Salt River, Cape Town, Hope on Hopkins comes in two types: London Dry, Salt River and Mediterranean, each with a slightly different flavour but still based on the unique combination of South African-grown ingredients.

  • Inverroche

Also distilled in the Western Cape, with Inverroche there’s a flavour to suit every palette: the classic dry gin for old school G&T lovers, the Verdant that has strong fynbos and botanical flavours, and the Amber that’s citrus and spicy.

  • Jorgensen’s

Its minimalist bottle stands out on the shelves, and its taste is one of a kind too: it’s infused with citrus, liquorice, ginger and apricot kernels along with juniper berries for a fruity explosion.

  • New Harbour Distillery Rooibos-Infused Gin

Here’s one for the tea lovers. New Harbour’s gin is mixed with the finest rooibos leaves, which gives it its deep amber flavour, and distilled in small batches.

  • Cruxland

KWV now make more than just your uncle’s favourite brandy. Their gin is infused with Kalahari truffles, 9 botanicals and 100% grape spirits.

  • Now pimp out your home bar

Your choice of mixer and what you use to make your drinks are as important as the spirit you decide to use. You can add a new flavour, change the colour of your drink or keep it classic – there’s a tonic water, lemonade or ginger ale just for you. Here are our favourites.

    Fever-Tree Tonic
