Milestone: Baby's First Steps
THERE'S NO RUSH
While most babies will attempt to take their first tentative steps at twelve months, don’t worry if yours is still happily crawling everywhere at that age. Many children only start a few months after their first birthday. To encourage your baby to take his/her first steps, be sure not to overdress them. Avoid bulky clothes that are too loose and will burden them, or tight-fitting ones that restrict movement. Light vests & bodysuits are ideal.
TODDLER-PROOF YOUR HOME
Get down on your knees to see your home from the perspective of your newly-mobile toddler. Remove hazards like pointy corners and anything that could fall over. Arrange pieces of furniture, separating them just far enough to encourage him to take an unsupported step from one to the next. Learning to walk barefoot is ideal, but non-slip socks and tights are essential for cold floors.
ENCOURAGEMENT & SUPPORT
Praise every attempt your baby makes at standing up and balancing without your help. Grasp them gently by both hands and lead them for longer and longer distances, gradually weaning them off your guiding support. Non-slip, soft slippers provide security and comfort while keeping little toes warm.
PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE
Give your child opportunities to practice his walking every day by not confining him to a playpen or pram for long periods. Avoid walkers with wheels that actually reduce the desire to walk independently. Sturdy push toys, like toy lawnmowers, are much more suitable. Dress them in comfortable tights, leggings or shorts that don't get in the way of toddling legs.
FIRST SHOES
Look for comfortable shoes with breathable uppers, easy to open and close fasteners, flexible, non-slip soles and a wide base that helps with balance. She should stand while trying out her new shoes and you should be able to press your thumb between the end of the toes and the tip of the shoe with just enough space to squeeze in your little finger at the heel.
