Meet Makomborero Mutezo. Lover of all things to do with food, industrial design and fashion. Makomborero is the founder of TheHungryMute, a platform that combines his passion for food and design to create a unique experience for every customer.

The gourmet brownie, the TheHungryMute’s inaugural product, debuted in February 2023 after three years of market research. As a brownie lover, Makomborero aimed to create a healthy and tasty product that uses beautifully designed packaging with a diverse flavour profile made from raw ingredients sourced across the African continent.

Since high school, Makomborero has known that he wants to be a part of the food and design world. In 2019, he pursued a degree in Culinary Arts and Food Design at the Capsicum Culinary Studio. During his studies, Makomborero worked for various retailers like the Bounty Group, Nike and the Cotton On Group to develop a clear and comprehensive skill set. 2019 was also the year Makomborero started a blog, posting, writing and generally presenting food in the best way possible. This marked the early days of TheHungryMute, a name that plays on Makomborero’s last name and his mission to silence the hunger of his customers.

When asked about his experience with his Woolies mentors, an opportunity offered through the Youth Makers Competition, Makomborero shares it has been immensely beneficial to the development of his business. The valuable insights and perspectives gained have been helpful in shaping his entrepreneurial journey. Makomborero is eager to continue learning and leveraging the knowledge he receives to propel TheHungryMute forward.

As a young, ambitious industrialist, Makomborero envisions TheHungryMute servicing the food network across Africa, boosting the value chain and providing jobs for countless chefs and designers across the continent. Furthermore, he is looking to develop the research and development arm of the business so he can improve his product quality and push the boundaries on new and innovative recipes.
