13 No-bake Snacks Kids Can Make

Holiday Baking for Your Budding Chef

School holiday boredom + 3 meals a day + snacks = time you don’t have. Let the kids do it themselves with these 13 no-bake meals and treats that require minimal supervision and no oven time, but deliver on flavour.

1. ABC VEGGIE CHEESY DIP

Cut sweet peppers and carrots using alphabet cookie cutters, and make a delicious dip with cream cheese, a splash of milk and garlic salt. It’s a good time to teach spelling – get the kids to dip D-O-G in order, for example.

2. MICROWAVE EGG SANDWICH

Scramble one egg and place it in a ramekin along with bacon bits. Microwave for 30 seconds, stir and cook more if needed. Remove and top with ready-made salsa, a sprinkle of shredded cheese and serve on a toasted English muffin.

3. MINI WHOLEWHEAT POCKETS

Using a butter knife, allow your budding chef to slice the top off a pita and stuff with fillings they love, like hummus, feta, julienne carrots and/or beetroot, or nut butter, banana and apple slices.

4. FRUITY AND CHEESY KEBABS

Cut the sharp end of a skewer and thread chopped strawberries, grapes, pineapple and blocks of cheese onto it. Or, skip the cheese and add a yummy yoghurt dip.

5. CHEEKY CHOCOLATE BITES

In a large bowl, mix Woolies No Added Salt & Sugar Peanut Butter, a teaspoon of vanilla essence, a sprinkle of rolled oats, crunchy hazelnuts and choc chips or cacao nibs. Scoop up some of the mixture and roll into a ball. Continue. Pop into the fridge for a few minutes to set. Can last in the fridge for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.

6. NO-BAKE VERY-CHERRY COOKIES

This will require mommy or daddy’s help. In a saucepan, mix 2 cups sugar, 1 cup butter, 6 tablespoons milk and 3 tablespoons cocoa. Cook and stir for 3 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir in 1 cup of peanut butter, a dash of vanilla essence, 3 cups of instant oats and a jar of drained cherries or chopped fresh cherries. Drop mixure by tablespoonfuls onto waxed paper sheets and refrigerate until set. Yum!

7. TWO-MINUTE TACOS

Scoop avo, cream cheese, salsa and guacamole into taco shells. Top with shredded cheese, sliced green onions, even some of last night’s warmed-up tasty mince.

8. ‘HAY AND STRAW’ PASTA

Get your little one to slice ham into strips (hay) using a butter knife, while you melt butter in the microwave. Pour the butter over some leftover linguine (straws), add peas and the ham and mix. Top with Parmesan and serve immediately

9. MMM MILKSHAKES OR PERFECT POPSICLES

Chop our sweet Flavourburst ™ peaches, strawberries and watermelon and blitz in a blender with a dollop of ice cream or coconut milk and ice until puréed. Serve as a milkshake or freeze in popsicle moulds for an anytime summery snack. You can also skip the ice cream/milk and replace the peaches with our Clemengolds™ for a zesty, refreshing drink.

10. PEANUT BUTTER PINWHEELS

Spread peanut butter on wraps; drizzle with honey and sprinkle with granola. Roll up and cut into slices.

11. NUTELLA ‘PIZZAS’

A fun way to sneak in that daily fruit serving. Spread Nutella onto a wholewheat wrap and top with banana slices, strawberries and thinly sliced apple.

12. GOLDEN ON-THE-GO GRANOLA BANANAS

Cut bananas in half, insert a popsicle stick and freeze for about an hour. Stir almond butter, honey and cinnamon (optional) in a bowl and spread on the bananas, then roll in granola/muesli. Yoghurt and nuts with just a splash of chocolate work too!

13. CEREAL BARS

Mix 4 cups Rice Krispies, 3 cups oats, ½ cup corn flakes, and ½ cup shredded coconut in a bowl. In a saucepan, melt butter, add marshmallows until melted and stir in honey and dried cranberries. Pour over cereal, mix and cool for 5 minutes. Press into a pan and refrigerate to set.
