Wine gifts for Dad

The experts’ choices

Wine pros and enthusiasts, from Mogau Seshoene (a.k.a. The Lazy Makoti) to Salsify sommelier Victor Okolo, share the wines on their Father’s Day shopping lists.

Mogau Sheshone

Chef and award-winning cookbook author

“My selection is the Signature Cap Classique Vintage Reserve Brut, which I’ll be gifting my favourite uncle Gagi, who also turns 50 this year. Made by Villiera, it’s the perfect celebratory drink.”

Carl Wastie

Radio host, TV presenter and serious foodie

“I'd pick the Diemersdal Merlot Malbec for my dad – he’s a personality-filled guy who is warm and friendly, a lot like this wine. And I’d like to receive the Cederberg Merlot Shiraz. When I recently discovered this wine, I had a "where has this been all my life?" moment. It sips smoother than the sides of my mohawked head. It has an inher-ent fruitiness but is deep (which happens to be how I've been described by some).”

Abigail Donnelly

Woolworths TASTE food director and chief judge, Woolworths Eat Out Restaurant Awards

“My husband, Terry, loves to cook steak and his absolute favourite wine is a wooded Chardonnay. The richness of the Iona Ten Barrel Chardonnay is his best. This would be a perfect gift, with an aged rib-eye steak from the Wool-ies butcher counter. The richness and acidity of the wine cuts through the fatty meat. I might even throw in a pack of varietal-specific Chardonnay glasses. This would make him a very happy dad!”

Clem Pedro

Chef and Woolworths TASTE senior content producer

“Any time my dad has a glass of wine, you’d better believe it’s being partnered with a mouthwatering dish. The Creation Syrah Grenache is one of his favourites. The subtle peppery notes and rich, dark fruit flavour go so well with his fiery chicken livers in pepper sauce and peppered rack of lamb.”

Victor Okolo

2022 Eat Out WCellar wine service award winner

“I pick the Bosman Nero D’Avola Red. This is a unique South African wine made from the Sicilian red grape Nero d’Avola, and Bosman’s is the first and only wine to be made locally using this grape. Think olives, tomato, capers, hearty vegetable dishes and rich meats to match this bold red.

Rob Gower

Woolworths senior wine buyer

“As Father’s Day is in mid-winter, I prefer full-bodied whites and more spicy reds. For dads who enjoy white wines, I recommend the Saronsberg Earth and Sky white blend and Woolworths Signature Chardonnay. For red wine lov-ers, I’d go for Thelema’s the Abbey red blend and Saronsberg’s Life is Fine Shiraz.

Chef John Norris-Rogers

Head Chef, Pier

“I would go with the Kanonkop Paul Sauer. Kanonkop is an amazing estate producing great wine and this an iconic South African red blend – deep, full-bodied, elegant and smooth.”

Joseph Dhafana

Award-winning sommelier

The Signature Cap Classique Vintage Reserve Brut is an absolute must. It’s fresh with a great balance of acidity and citrus notes – no wonder that it’s a go-to for starting any event or celebration. And, as a Chardonnay lover, I have to include De Wetshof Limestone Hill Chardonnay. It’s tropical with hints of lime and butterscotch on the palate – straight out of Robertson, the home of great South African Chardonnay.
