Woolworths Signature Cap Classique

Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc

Paul Cluver Ferricrete Riesling

Woolworths Signature Cap Classique 2014 from Villiera

Platter's stars: 4.5
This premium Cap Classique from Woolworths’ Signature wine range is a collaboration between Villiera winemaker Jeff Grier and Cape Wine Master Allan Mullins, who are so proud of their work that they signed the label on the bottle. And rightly so… A second fermentation of six years on the lees has resulted in a creamy, yeasty nose and a full-bodied, complex palate with brioche, dark fruit and hints of honey and chocolate. Pair it with your favourite shellfish and seafood recipes.

Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc Vineyard Selection 2019

Platter's stars: 5
There’s plenty to celebrate at Kleine Zalze – the Stellenbosch estate was crowned as the Platter’s Top Performing Winery of the Year. Head winemaker RJ Botha was over the moon when he heard that Kleine Zalze had seven wines achieving five stars: “This is probably one of those things that will happen once in my life. Who would have thought 2020 would have a silver lining!”

The Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc Vineyard Selection 2019 has flavours of melon, peach, guava and a hint of minerality. Enjoy it now or age it for up to ten years.

Woolworths Paul Cluver Ferricrete Riesling

Platter's stars: 5
Named for the iron-rich soil the vines are planted in, this is a typical German-style Riesling with stony minerality, lemon fruit, citrus blossom and a crisp finish. It’s a perfect wine to pair with summer dishes, from grilled chicken and fish, to salads and creamy pastas. In fact, Riesling is one of the most versatile food wines and is also an excellent match for recipes with some spice. Pour this one with your favourite Indian, Mexican or Thai recipe for refreshing coolness on your palate.

How does the judging work?

The Platter's tasting panel uses two judging methods: label-sighted tasting and blind tasting. The experts initially assess the wines sighted, so that they can learn as much as possible about the intent of the producer, as well as details such as site and climate.

Wines scored 93 points and up are then re-tasted in a Five Star Taste-off, where small panels of experts assess all these wines blind to find the Five Star laureates.

A rating of five stars means the wine has scored at least 95 out of 100 points in a blind tasting by the tasting panel, and is considered a superlative and classic South African wine.
