Easy, Ikea-style meatballs for the win

Inspired by the Swedish retail giant Ikea’s famous meatballs, these meatballs  are quick to make and packed with flavour. It’s a great recipe to pull out when the masses descend, now that December is almost here…

  1. Combine 500 g beef mince,
  2. 2 tablespoons dried breadcrumbs,
  3. 1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley,
  4. 1 free range egg (beaten),
  5. 1 teaspoon dried garlic,
  6. ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg,
  7. 1 small onion (finely chopped) and ground white pepper and salt, to taste.
  8. Roll the mixture into 3 cm balls.
  9. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a pan and fry the meatballs in batches over a medium heat until cooked through.
  10. To make the sauce, melt 6 tablespoons butter in a pan.
  11. Add 3 tablespoons flour and whisk until it turns light brown.
  12. Add 2 cups beef stock, 1 cup cream, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce and 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard and simmer.
  13. Whisk until thick.
  14. Add the meatballs and any pan juices to the sauce and simmer for another 2 minutes.
  15. Serve with pasta or rice.
  16. Bottoms up!
