Good quality sleep is vital for optimal physical and mental health. There’s nothing quite as comforting as a quality pillow to help you sleep well and wake up feeling refreshed. From pillow fill to pillow firmness, here’s our guide on choosing the best pillow for your needs.

Sleep position

Your natural sleeping position determines the type of pillow that’s best for you. A good pillow should keep your neck and spine aligned in a neutral position. Take a moment to think about your sleep position. Do you typically sleep on your back, side, or stomach? If you’re a side sleeper, you’ll need a firmer pillow with more neck and head support, whereas stomach sleepers require a softer and flatter pillow to avoid neck strain. If you’re a back sleeper, a softer pillow is a good choice to keep your head and neck in alignment – unless you suffer from back or neck pain, then you may need a medium to firm pillow for additional support.

Pillow fill

There are several factors to keep in mind when choosing a fill for your pillows. Do you have any allergies? Do you tend to overheat or sweat while sleeping? Pillows with natural fillings such as duck feathers and duck down are soft, breathable and great for keeping you cool and comfortable. Tencel fibre is another natural, eco-friendly alternative for those with allergies and also works well for moisture control. Synthetic fillings such as polyester or memory foam are hypoallergenic and won’t trigger allergies, so you can be sure of uninterrupted sleep. And because memory foam conforms to your shape for better head and neck alignment, it achieves the perfect balance between comfort and support.

Pillow Casing/Shell

The fabric used to make your pillow casing can make all the difference to the quality of your sleep. Cotton and cotton blends are the preferred choice when it comes to pillow casing. Cotton is breathable and wicks moisture away from your skin, keeping you cool and comfortable throughout the night. Synthetic fabrics like microfibre polyester are hypoallergenic, so perfect for those with allergies.

Care for your pillows

A good rule of thumb is to wash your pillows every six months. Follow the care instructions that come with your pillows to keep them in good shape and ensure longevity. We recommend a pillow cover for your pillows to protect them from stains and dust mites and extend their lifespan. Fluffing your pillows daily will help maintain their shape and loft. Replace your pillows as soon as your notice tears, discolouration or loss of shape and support.
