Choosing the Right Curtain Drop and Fabric

Curtains make a home feel cosy and inviting. The right curtains afford you privacy and make a room feel complete. From fabric choice to size, here's our step-by-step guide to choosing curtains to suit your space.

The Fabric

First, consider your needs: are you looking for a curtain that lets light in or blocks light out completely? Heavy fabrics like velvet and block-out curtains are great for keeping the light out when you need to, for instance in a TV room or a baby’s nursery. They also help keep your home insulated during winter and cooler in summer. Linen and cotton curtains, on the one hand, are light and airy – great for summertime or when you want to create a soft, relaxed feel.

Polyester, commonly used to make block-out curtains, is a great choice when looking for a durable and low-maintenance option.

The Size

Curtain size depends on your desired drape and fullness. Do you prefer your curtain to hover just above the floor, lightly touch it or puddle? Curtains that hover just above the floor are practical and create a casual look. A puddled drape can give a room a dramatic, opulent mood. If this is the look you want, a good rule of thumb is to add about 3-8cm to the length of your curtain. For width, we recommend choosing a curtain that is two times the width of your window to achieve fullness.
