LEARNING MATHS 1, 2, 3
Thohoyandou Primary School in Pretoria South is a no-fee Venda-speaking school and is one of 66 Gauteng ‘under-performing’ schools, where most learners come from poor socio-economic areas and home circumstances are less than ideal. With 657 learners and 17 teachers, including the principal and deputy principal, classes are large and classrooms are old and worn out.
Through their partnership with MySchool, however, things are being turned around, and a world of possibility is opening up to the children.
The partnership is focused on classroom renovations and addressing under performance in Maths and Literacy. Through sponsoring the Brain Boosters initiative and by providing teachers with reusable recourses, the school is able to fast track practical changes in the classroom. The results so far are increased staff and learner motivation, and the effective transfer of valuable skills through its practical ‘train the trainer’ approach.
As well as being actively supported by Government, Thohoyandou Primary is part of the Community of Learning Principals and continues to be actively supported by MySchool in other practical ways too, such as the refurbishment of toilets and resurfacing of classroom floors.
