FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The NSH Food Bursary Programme was launched in 2011 by Professor Jonathan Jansen at the University of the Free State. The bursaries are awarded to students on the basis of financial need, academic excellence and a commitment to serve their wider community.
NSH students use the food bursary to enable them to focus on their studies and getting their degrees. The programme is focused on the importance of good nutrition and food security, where students are able to swipe their student cards to buy healthy meals every day, which enhances their concentration and academic performance.
The NSH Bursary Programme (NSH) helps over 650 students, with UFS MySchool funds going directly to the NSH Food Bursary Programme.
One such student is Katlego – a BCom Human Resource Management graduate who is completing her Industrial Psychology Honours and who heard about the NSH Food Bursary through a friend in 2014.
“There’s no shame in asking for help – there can only be hope and relief, and I am so thankful for NSH”. She adds that students are encouraged to give back through the programme, “The community service projects have helped me to get out of my comfort zone, to look beyond myself and acknowledge that I am also required to give back my time to others who appreciate and cherish it”.
NSH students are showing their gratitude by giving back over 24000 community hours, ensuring that all MySchool funds are making a difference to graduates and their communities.
