Woolworths Green Building Certification
When we design a new store, we look at how to include as many energy-saving elements in the building’s design as possible. We call these “green stores.”
We have developed our own rating model for stores based on the number of sustainability features they include. This allows new and existing stores to be classified as silver, gold or platinum level stores, with platinum level being the highest category for stores with the most sustainability features. Our Palmyra Junction store in Cape Town is our flagship green store. It brings together our plans to save energy, conserve water and manage waste better. We have also had Palmyra independently verified by the Green Building Council South Africa, achieving a 5-star rating using the existing building tenant tool.

The store has been equipped with all sorts of energy-saving innovations, including:
- Automatic doors to efficiently control the temperature
- Energy-efficient LED lighting that adjusts automatically to natural light
- Natural gas refrigeration
- Closed door refrigeration
- Vents that allow for natural light from the roof
- Under-floor heating that uses recycled waste heat from refrigeration
- Screens which show real-time energy usage
