Energy

We want to reduce the negative impacts of climate change. That’s why we’ve made a commitment to using energy efficiently and reducing our carbon footprint.

Here's how we're saving energy:

1. Whenever we design a new store, we look at how to include energy-saving elements like natural ventilation, automated lighting systems, solar-powered water heating and energy-efficient lighting in the building’s design.

2. As part of our Green Building Programme, we’ve rolled out energy-efficient light fixtures across most of our stores, and ensure that lights are turned off automatically after hours using automatic lighting control.

3. We monitor energy usage across all of our stores on a real-time basis to ensure that we are only using what we need.

4. All our refridgerated truck units are fitted with remote monitoring devices that enable us to monitor and adjust the temperature, ensuring our products arrive in good condition.

5. We're using solar power to suppliment electricity in our head office and distribution centres (DC's). In fact, nearly 60% of the energy requirements of our largest DC in Midrand, Johannesburg is powered by the sun.

6. We’re using a natural gas (CO2) instead of synthetic gas for store refrigeration because unlike conventional synthetic refrigeration gases, CO2 has virtually no impact on the earth’s ozone layer and a negligible climate impact. It also uses less energy.

7. Our clothing comes with wash care labels that promote washing at 30°c or less. Through this, we’re helping our customers reduce their energy consumption.

8. By working with soil scientists through our Farming for the Future programme, we also regularly monitor our farmers’ soil quality to increase its capacity to absorb CO2.
