Buying coffee beans vs grounds and how to store them
Whole beans vs ground coffee
If time, space for a coffee grinder, or other parts of real-life get in the way, buying your coffee pre-ground is a great way to make a quality cup of coffee. Ground coffee starts losing flavour from the it's ground, in transit and sitting on the shelf, so make sure you store it properly to get the best flavour and aroma from it.
Packaging and storage
You'll find some coffee beans sold in paper bags, but since it allows gas molecules to flow in and out the bag, flavour will be lost and you'd need to use it within about a week. So, if you want to buy a supply for more than just a few days, stick to the one-way foil bags for maximum coffee taste.
Fridge or pantry?
Experts are adamant that a fridge is no place for coffee, since coffee absorbs the scents of everything around them. So, unless you want your coffee to taste like the garlic or onions in your fridge, don't store it in there. The freezer is a debated topic, some say you can keep it in a chest freezer (or any freezer that doesn't get opened too often) but only for a week or two.
The best place for your coffee is in its foil bag (or airtight plastic container) in your cupboard or pantry far away from light, at room temperature. You'll also want to avoid steam and moisture, so make sure your sink and ketlle aren't too nearby.
If you stick to the proper coffee storing habits, you'll be bale to enjoy an excellent cup of coffee time after time.
