You will need:

  • Saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Baking tray
  • A pair of scissors
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients:

  • Valentine's Heart-Shaped Churros with Board Kit 100 g
  • 50 g butter
  • 1 large free-range eggs
  • 125 ml water
  • Dipping sauce/ decorations of choice

Instructions:

  1. HEAT oven to 190˚C (or 170˚C for fan function). Line baking tray with baking paper.
  2. PLACE water and butter in a saucepan and stir continuously over medium heat. Continue stirring until the butter has melted and mixture starts to boil. Reduce to a low heat.
  3. ADD the churro mix and combine until you get a soft, ball-forming dough. Keep mixing the dough on a low heat for 1 minute. Remove the saucepan from the heat and continue mixing the dough for another 2 minutes.
  4. REST dough in the pot for 2 minutes, allowing it to cool slightly (this prevents the eggs from scrambling). Add one egg at a time and mix until a soft and smooth dough is formed, and the egg is well incorporated.
  5. SPOON the dough into the piping bag. Cut the tip off the piping bag (approx. 4,5 cm up from the tip of the bag) and insert the star-shaped piping nozzle provided.

For Valentine’s Day inspiration: pipe hearts, for normal churros, pipe straight lines

  1. HOLD the piping bag at a 90-degree angle over a baking tray lined with baking paper.
  2. START piping the heart shape: Begin at the top of the heart, create a small loop to the left, then bring the dough back up and over to create the right side of the heart, finishing at the bottom point.
  3. REPEAT the process until you have piped all the dough into heart shapes (approx. 6 -8 hearts)
  4. SPRINKLE a small amount of water on the tray by running one hand under a tap and flicking water droplets with your fingers over the tray and dough (3 flicks are sufficient). This creates steam that helps the dough to puff up.
  5. BAKE for 20 - 22 minutes. Open the oven door for 5 seconds to release steam build up. Close the oven door, switch off the oven and leave the churros to rest in the oven for 10 -15 minutes or until golden brown in colour.
  6. ROLL the churros in the cinnamon sugar. Leave on the cooling rack for a few minutes.
