Winning wines for the braai

One of the winemakers behind the Woolworths Signature Series, the legendary Beyers Truter of Beyerskloof, shares his favourite braai tips – and news on a brand-new Woolies exclusive. With summer on its way and braais across the nation about to be lit in celebration of the season, you might be wondering what to offer guests to drink at your next braai. Thankfully, Beyers Truter of Beyerskloof, who makes the Signature Pinotage, can tell you what bottle is best to bring.

Not many people know that the Signature Pinotage is a classic.
It’s made from grapes chosen from select vineyard blocks that we think are best for this top-tier wine, which is full of dark fruit flavours.

Pinotage is SA’s best-kept secret...
because it’s the most balanced red. Compare a young Pinotage with a young Cabernet Sauvignon – the Pinotage will always be softer and more easy-drinking.

The Signature Pinotage is a great braai wine.
Best paired with thick-cut steaks, chops and game, it’s an easy-drinking wine despite its full body.

One of my favourite things to braai...
is snoek. I mix half olive oil, half-white Pinotage (Beyerkloof’s Chenin-Pinotage blend), garlic and lemon juice in a bottle and use it to baste the fish.

We have a 30-seater table in the cellar...
and I love nothing more than having a meal there with my whole family and best friends, including my brother and winemakers Neil Ellis and Kevin Arnold.
