Become a coffee expert
Cappuccino, Latte, Mocha...we order these things every day, yet how many of you actually know what they mean? Here's our coffee lingo cheat sheet to becoming a expert.
- ESPRESSO: The starting point for most coffee-drinks. Essentially, hot, highly pressurised water is forced through tightly packed coffee grounds. Usually served in a small cup. Larger coffees often have an extra shot of espresso added, makign them a "double".
- AMERICANO: Espresso topped up with hot water. Essentially a basic coffee to which hot or cold milk can be added later.
- CAPPUCCINO: 1/3 espresso under 1/3 hot milk under 1/3 milk foam. Never served after 11am in Italy.
- LATTE: One standard espresso, usually in a tall mug, topped up with hot milk.
- MACCHIATO: One of two things: An espresso with a small amount of milk OR a cup of steamed milk with an espresso poured on top, essentially an upside-down latte.
- MOCHA: One standard espresso mixed with chocolate, usually in the form of cocoa powder, and topped up with hot milk.
- RISTRETTO: Similar to an espresso, but made with half the amount of water. The result: a more concerntrated espresso.
- FLAT WHITE: Made like a cappucino, except it's made with steamed milk and has no foam or chocolate on top.
- PICCOLO LATTE: A latte made in an espresso cup.
- AFFOGATO: This is a great dessert coffee, made with one or two shots of espresso coffee and a heaped spoon of vanilla ice cream.
