How to make golden vetkoek

Makes approximately 12 Vetkoek
Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 Woolworths Golden Vetkoek Kit
  • Kit Includes:
  • 435 g Vetkoek Mix

You need:

  • 1 cup water
  • Approximately 400 ml canola or vegetable oil
  • Icing sugar, for dusting
  • Golden syrup, for serving

Method:

  1. Mix the water and vetkoek mix until dough forms. If you’re using a stand mixer, use the dough hook attachment. If kneading by hand, ensure you do so on a well-floured surface. The dough may feel sticky, but a floured surface will make it workable.
  2. Roll out the dough into two long cylinders on a floured surface, then cut into 12 pieces.
  3. Using your hands, roll each piece into a ball. Heat the oil in a saucepan. To test whether the oil is hot enough, place the handle of a wooden spoon into the oil. If bubbles rise to the surface of the oil, it’s ready. (Or add some dough; the oil should start bubbling immediately.)
  4. Cook the vetkoek in the oil in batches, turning each one after a minute or two once golden brown. Each one will take approximately 4–5 minutes to cook. Drain on kitchen paper.
  5. Dust with icing sugar and serve with golden syrup. Alternatively, serve with butter and jam or stuff with savoury mince.
