9 Keepsakes Kids Can Make for Granny, Grandpa, Aunts and Uncles

With the lockdown extended, little ones may be anxious to know when ‘gogo’, ‘oupa’, ‘gramps’, granny, nana, cousins, uncle or auntie may visit again – and looking forward to those home-made, yummy treats and warm hugs. Why not make sweet keepsakes to surprise them when next you see them?

Try our 9 super-easy crafts and add their personal stamp to create one-of-a-kind mementos that will be cherished forever.

1. Puzzle Piece Frame

Your rascals may have grown, lost a tooth or had a haircut over the past few weeks. So, take a lovely family photo, print it out, add a frame made with puzzle pieces and a “We miss you to pieces” message.

2. Printed T-shirts

Have spare plain tees? Grab a stencil and let your artists spray on their names, add a handprint or decorate it with their favourite fruits, treats and hobbies. Kids can use sponges, potato stamps, paint, glitter or fabric to make this personalised gift.

3. Hand-made Hand Scrubs

After gardening, gogo will appreciate this sweet-smelling hand scrub, made with gentle ingredients you’ll find at home. Simply mix olive- or baby oil with sugar, and add a few drops of essential oils in her favourite scent such as lemongrass or rosemary. Place into glass jars.

4. DIY Gardening Belt

A little help when they’re in their herb garden. Use an old apron, moon bag or cut the top off a pair of jeans. Make sure it has pockets to hold all their gardening tools. Decorate it with painted ladybugs, flowers or veggies and add loops to hang anything they like!

5. Coasters

These are so much fun to make! Decorate leftover white tiles by dipping them into a bowl of water with a few drops of paint floating on the surface, and let them dry. You can also decorate cork or cardboard with colourful washi tape, or use masking tape to paint on beautiful geometric prints.

6. Shrinky Dink Keychains and Charm Bracelets

These charms make sweet, wearable gifts gramps and granny are sure to treasure. You can shrink your child’s handprint, little hearts or special symbols and make keyrings, charm bracelets or tree decorations! Find out how here.

7. ‘Wish You Were Here’ Postcards

Postcards are a great way to stay connected to loved ones. Make virtual ones here. Or draw your own island getaway on a piece of cardboard, add a real stamp and a hand-drawn message – even more precious! Snap a pic and surprise them, or wait a few more days and make a special hand delivery.

8. Decorated Dinner Plates

These plates will make a treasured gift that you can use for every family celebration. All you need are permanent markers and inexpensive white plates – just add your child’s creative inspiration.

9. Chalk Planters

One for gardenlovers! Pot plants, personalised with chalk paint. Include quirky messaging like ‘lettuce turnip the beet’, or ‘thyme for planting’! As the plants grow, they can just erase the chalk and start again.

Happy crafting!
