THE TASTE CASE: ROSÉ

Try Allan Mullins' six of the best

Nothing announces the arrival of summer quite like a glass of rosé, says Cape Wine Master Allan Mullins. His case of six includes a Franschhoek favourite and a new de-alcoholised sparkling wine.

  1. Diemersdal Grenache Rosé

More and more people are sipping rosé in South Africa, and with great examples like this, it’s easy to see why. In this light to medium-bodied dry wine, strawberry aromas and rose petal undertones are followed by luscious cherry and raspberry flavours. It’s a perfect match with chicken salad or fruity desserts.
  2. Simonsig Pinot Noir Rosé No Sulphur Added Méthode Cap Classique

You’ll love its delicate copper colour in your glass, layers of delectable fruit on the nose, and the refreshing palate. Careful winemaking to avoid the addition of sulphur dioxide adds to the appeal of this award-winning bubbly, which is a treat with smoked salmon, prawns and oysters.
  3. Pierre Jourdan Tranquille Blush

If you’re looking for the perfect partner for sushi, you’ve found it in this wine from renowned Franschhoek producer Haute Cabrière. This blend of Pinot Noir, which adds red berries and a touch of cassis, and Chardonnay, which gives white peach and pear flavours, is a summer favourite.
  4. Domaine Grier French Rosé

Dry rosés, especially those from the south of France, have become one of the fastest growing wine categories internationally. Apart from Villiera in Stellenbosch, the Grier family also own a property in Roussillon where they produce wines including this one made from Shiraz and Grenache. A great partner for bouillabaisse or ratatouille.
  5. Woolworths De-Alc Sparkling Rosé

This innovative addition to South Africa’s de-alcoholised wine offering is only available at Woolworths. It contains less than 0.5% alcohol by volume and is delicious served well chilled. You’ll love the red berry fruits on the nose and the effervescent bubbles on your palate.
  6. Steenberg Reserve Collection Rosé

A stylish Constantia rosé that blends Syrah from Steenberg and Robertson with Cinsault from old bush vines in the heart of Stellenbosch and the Swartland. They all come together perfectly in this wine, where Syrah brings a soft spiciness and Cinsault adds peachy freshness.
