How to pick the best glass for your bubbly
Coupe, tulip or flute: what’s the best glass for your favourite bubbly? To help you make the most of celebrations and downtime, here’s how to sip in style.
THE CLASSIC CHOICE: The flute
Flutes are great for showing off the bubbles in sparkling wines. The smaller surface area slows down the loss of carbon dioxide and the tall, slender shape shows off the vertical streams of tiny bubbles. (But the narrow aperture of these glasses does sometimes send the bubbles right up your nose!)
SHOP FLUTESTHE RETRO FAVOURITE: The coupe
This is the oldest style of Champagne glass. Because they’re shallow and wide, the carbon dioxide rises and dissipates quickly – so you’ll have to drink fast, but you’ll look très chic holding your drink. The coupe is also ideal for Champagne cocktails.
THE TRENDY OPTION: The white wine glass
Feel free to pour bubbly into a white wine glass. “The broader glass allows you to swirl the wine, releasing the aromatics,” says sommelier Roxan Waldeck.
A PRO TIP ON TEMPERATURE
A final word of advice: “Never pre-chill your glasses as you’ll lose some of the sparkle in your bubbly,” says sommelier Juliet Urquhart.
