Fashion Rules You Can Break

Not everything is black and white (or matchy-matchy).

  1. You can’t wear metallics during the day

You actually can. In fact, they’re on trend now more than ever. Rock a pleated metallic skirt with ankle boots and a sweater for a street-ready look.
  2. Black and brown don’t go together

Most tones of brown look amazing against black - especially when mixing warm mid-tones, like camel and tan. Make it a must for your winter layering.
  3. Don’t mix prints

Mixing patterns can be a risk, but it can also be the key to creating a standout look. Contrast large prints with smaller ones to create balance.
  4. Your belt and shoes have to match

Unless you’re going for a head-to-toe monochrome look (which is equally as chic) your accessories don’t always have to match.
  5. Avoid horizontal stripes

They might be intimidating, but they‘re a French style staple for a reason. Even your nautical look out with monochrome separates.
  6. Oversized clothes look sloppy

There’s nothing sloppy about a larger fit – in fact, oversized is hot for the new season. Mix different items of different proportions, or follow the Yeezy route and keep the trend for your casual and sportswear.
  7. Don’t wear bright colours in winter

Unless dark tones are part of your aesthetic, you can very easily brighten things up when it’s cold outside. Nothing says ‘statement’ like a colourful coat on a grey day.
  8. Formalwear means high heels

A pair of loafers or brogues can look just as good as a stiletto or block heel. Go for a full-on menswear inspired outfit with a suit and patent brogues, or keep it lady-like with a pleated skirt and white shirt.
