Sun Safety for Tiny Tots

Babies need extra care and protection from the sun... with these five tips you can make sure your little one stays out of harm’s way when out and about.

  1. Dehydration

Guard against dehydration by topping up with extra breastfeeds, bottles or small drinks of cool, boiled water during hot weather.
  2. Overheating

Babies can overheat quickly so look out for any signs of heat stress or dehydration like fewer wet nappies, floppiness or irritability. If you’re concerned, see a doctor immediately.
  3. Skin Protection

Protect baby’s delicate skin by always keeping him or her in the shade – under a tree, umbrella or pop up tent. Cover car windows when travelling and place a light sheet over baby’s pram. Never leave a baby alone in the car, even if it’s parked in the shade. Stay indoors especially at midday.
  4. Cover Up

Cover up – dress baby lightly and cover their legs and arms to protect their delicate skin. Wide brimmed hats are perfect for babies.
  5. Sunscreen

Slather all exposed skin with baby-friendly sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and protects against both UVA and UVB radiation.
