A guide to the perfect cheese platter

MORE ENTERTAINING IDEAS

Impress guests with a perfectly put-together cheese platter that blends delicous flavour and texture with eye catching appeal. Here are our five tips to hitting the right cheesy notes to delight:

  1. TEST YOUR STRENGTH

You want a range of flavours, so pick a selection across the mild to strong flavour range. Generally this would start with a mild gouda  or cheddar and travel the spectrum to a blue so ripe it’ll knock your socks off (in the best possible way, of course!)

  2. VARY THE TEXTURES

Just as you want a variety of flavours, you also want a variety of textures, so make sure you have a soft creamy cheese such as chevin, a crumbly cheese such as mature cheddar, and a runny cheese such as a ripe brie.

  3. PICK YOUR NUMBER

Three different cheeses are a good start, and move up from there as your numbers increase. If you’re just serving a cheese platter, work on one cheese per person – it sounds like a lot, but any leftovers can be wrapped up in wax paper and stored happily in the fridge.
  4. HAVE A GOOD BASE

Crackers and breads are a must – they’re the perfect vehicle for whatever cheese you choose. We’d suggest a thinly sliced baguette, some water biscuits, and a variety of crackers.

  5. ADD ACCOMPANIMENTS

Cheese is the star of the show, but the accompaniments are vital highlights and cut through the richness. Grapes, soft apricots, honey for drizzling, slices of tart apples, and a selection of nuts are great options.
