Taking Care of Little Feet

Watching your growing child walk, run and play for hours on end every day, you understand perfectly well that it’s really essential to look after her little feet carefully.

Did you know that a baby is born with 22 bones in each foot? It’s one of the reasons why it’s so important to take special care of them – from developing good hygiene habits to buying the right footwear at the right time for them. We’ve put together a list of simple tips to guide you:

  1. Clean feet

Always keep feet clean and nails trimmed straight across to avoid ingrown toe nails which can be painful and become infected.
  2. Dry between the toes

Be sure to carefully dry the spaces between the toes to help prevent fungal infections.
  3. Foot measurements

Check your child’s foot measurements every six to eight weeks – and always measure both feet. Children’s feet grow by approximately two shoe sizes per year until age four. After age five, check every four to five months. Girls’ feet tend to grow rather rapidly from age eight to 13, while boys usually catch up between 10 and 16.
  4. Fit socks properly

Make sure that socks fit properly – they should neither be too tight nor too loose.
  5. No hand-me-downs

Don’t pass on shoes from one child to another. It’s not a good idea, because shoes that fit one kid properly may not be right for the other.
  6. In general, it’s a good idea to choose closed toe shoes for younger ones and go for open-toe varieties once they are a little older, but obviously the decision will depend on your child’s specific circumstances and needs as she grows.
