Q&A with Nomalanga Shozi

Find out why Nomalanga a.k.a The Flame burns bright in our EDITION campaign.

  1. As a SA media personality, what does fashion mean to you?

To me it means what every artist values most: expression.
  2. What are your thoughts on the SA film industry and where would you like to see it go?

I'd like to see the industry tell our stories differently and also see the craft taken more seriously – like how it was back in the Shaka Zulu days. I also think more black writers, producers, directors, etc. need more opportunities. #OpenUpTheIndustry
  3. Who are some of your favourite SA visual artists and why?

Mary Sibande because of her reflective narrative and obscure articulation and Lady Skollie because of her take on sex and how she expresses her fears towards intercourse.
  4. If you could take clothes from any SA personality's wardrobe, who would it be?

    The late Ma Miriam Makeba.
  5. Who are some of your favourite SA designers?

Slindile Sibisi from GoodFriday 80, Lukhanyo Mdingi and Laduma Ngxokolo from MaXhosa by Laduma.
  6. What was it like being photographed by Trevor Stuurman?

Trevor loves his art and telling an authentically African story. I appreciate that he encourages you to be completely comfortable during a shoot, maximises your strengths and also makes you feel really good about them. He's a dream!
  7. What's your favourite winter go-to item?

A classic blazer. You can never go wrong with it. For this particular season, a classic blazer with really sharp shoulders to raise the stakes are bit, because why not?
