Q&A with Dear Ribane
The artistic siblings star in our EDITION campaign. Find out what inspires them and which SA artists they’re digging.
What trends are you most looking forward to this season?
We’re looking forward to the upcoming Nike Lab and Nike Tech collections. We always gravitate towards strong, innovative execution and stand-out elements in the structure, texture, colour and detail, so we’re continuously amazed by Rei Kawakubo (founder and designer of Comme des Garçons) and the late architect Zaha Hadid. What was it like being photographed by Trevor Stuurman?
He’s legendary. His synergy and how he understands the value of working with people always brings out the best in everyone around him. He should be the next president. If you could take clothes from any SA personality's wardrobe, who would it be?
Kokona Ribane: Imraan Christian, a photographer based in Cape Town
Tebogo and Manthe Ribane: We both agreed on the same person – Yasmin Furmie. She's everything.Who are some of your favourite South African artists and why?
Mary Sibande. She's brilliantly timeless. What are your thoughts on the state of South African art?
The current state of our art is consistently evolving and gatekeepers are becoming more open-minded, but we also feel that more work should be done. There should be action put into innovating schools, forming new subjects, having more art galleries in townships and investing more in arts and culture. Why did you decide to go down the route of Afrofuturism?
Our transformative journey chose us. We always aim to create new narratives that will forever resonate with humanoids. What do you think you bring to the arts?
Our artwork is indescribable but we learn and grow from it all the time. You have to allow yourself to translate your experiences into new executions. For example, we would love to develop and create schools, opportunities that are mainly directed to the less privileged. To develop our craft, we’d love to study internationally and observe as much knowledge as possible so we can come home and share the knowledge.
