Choose Woolies sustainable seafood

At Woolies, we are committed to sourcing all our seafood from sustainable fisheries and our products from responsible farming operations and suppliers. This is how we do it:

Fishing for the future

This means we only source from suppliers who feel the same way about sustainable fishing as we do. We're passionate about the environment and the impact of overfishing in our oceans. And to ensure fish for future generations. We're working with local and iinternational organisations to meet our sustainable seafood commitments.

Traceability

The Marine Stewardship Council  (MSC) is an international organisation established to address the problem of unsustainable fishing and supply chain traceability. The MSC meets the highest benchmarks for credible certification and eco-labelling programs. Our MSC certification is valid for 5 years with annual surveillance audits that are accessible to the public to review.

Supporting coastal communities

Catching tuna with unsustainable methods has led to overfishing,a nd we're on a journey to preserve traditional catch methods. This helps to create better livelihoods for coastal communities and that there will be fish in the sea for future generations to enjoy.

No to red-listed fish

The South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) is a 'traffic light' quick reference guide to  help you make environmentally responsible seafood choices. It is not an eco-label, nor an endorsement of specific products. To use the SASSI list, you need to know what species you are eating., how it was caught/farmed and where it comes from.

  • The health of fish stocks and the vulnerability of the species to fishing pressure (what)
  • The environmental effects of the fishing method used to catch the fish (how)
  • The effectiveness of the management of the fishery (where)
