#Eatwell Challenge: Papaya

Every week we challenge you to add something new to your diet by taking up our #Eatwell challenge.

Papaya is one of our favourite tropical fruits because of its subtle sweet flavour and it’s more versatile than you think! A regular at breakfast time, it also makes a tasty addition to a salad or use it in a fresh salsa with spicy dishes. For a delicious snack between meals, all you need to do is slice one open, scoop out the seeds and enjoy.

Add papaya to your grocery list, but pay attention to the colour of the skin while shopping: green papayas will need to ripen at home. To speed up the ripening process, put the fruit in a brown paper bag and store it at room temperature. If you’re looking for an immediate fix, choose yellow to orange fruit.

Papayas can be refrigerated in a sealed plastic bag for up to one week (depending on how ripe they are at the time of purchase).

7 Ways to enjoy papaya

  1. Halve a papaya, scoop out the seeds, add a dollop of double cream yoghurt and top with toasted flaked almonds.
  2. Make a tropical fruit salad with chunks of papaya and slices of kiwi and pineapple.
  3. Smoothie time – blitz chopped papaya, banana, coconut, yoghurt and ice in your blender.
  4. Cut papaya into strips, wrap it with prosciutto and drizzle with a squeeze of lime juice.
  5. Make a tangy salad for your next braai : combine chunks of papaya, avocado pear and ruby grapefruit. Dress with a mixture of yoghurt, honey, grapefruit juice and mint.
  6. Chop it up and add to your lunchtime salad – it goes particularly well with seared tuna or prawns.
  7. Grill pieces on a griddle pan and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

We challenge you to upload pics of you enjoying or cooking with papaya to Twitter or Instagram. Don’t forget to tag @Woolworths_SA and add the hashtag #Eatwell. And remember, Discovery Vitality members get up to 25% cash back on over 1000 HealthyFood items at Woolworths.
