Easy Snacks Kids Can Make by Themselves

Writer and mom, Narique Sangster, shares some delicious recipes for children.
Recipes kids can do by themselves? Seems like something out of a parenting fairy tale. But since we’re all about making life easier for parents and more fun for little ones, we’ve put together some yummy recipes they can make all on their own.

Involving children in everyday activities such as cooking is a great way to encourage independence, show them how rewarding it can be to contribute to their immediate community, and also to nurture greater awareness of the food they choose to eat – where it comes from, how it’s made, and the simple fact that there’s usually an actual human lovingly making a meal before it lands up on their plate.

Depending on the age of your child, and the cooking experience (ha!) they have, you will most likely need to supervise them initially, or prepare cut fruits and so on until they’re ready to use a sharp knife on their own.  These recipes are suitable for children as young as 3 years old.

Mini Wholewheat Pita Pockets

Slice off the top of the pita (about 1cm) and allow your child to fill each pocket on their own, using the end of a teaspoon to help. Fillings could include:
  • Hummus, feta, julienne carrots and/or beetroot
  • Nut butter of your choice and apple slices

Peanut Butter Treats

These are great to have around for a quick and delicious treat. Your little one is going to love making these.

In a large bowl, mix your no-added-sugar-or-salt peanut butter, a teaspoon of vanilla essence, honey as desired and a sprinkle of rolled oats.
Using a spoon, scoop up some of the mixture and roll into a ball. Pop them into the fridge for a few minutes so that they can set. If you like, you’re welcome to add choc chips or cover them in melted chocolate. They can be kept in the fridge for up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.

Cool Banana Pops

This is really easy and fun for kids to do. You’ll need some bananas and popsicle sticks. Ask your child to help you peel the bananas and cut them in half with a butter knife. Insert a popsicle into each banana. Prepare a selection of toppings like nuts, chia seeds, sprinkles, yoghurt and melted chocolate.

Allow your child to dip each banana into the coating of your choice. Freeze for a few hours and enjoy!

Yoghurt Parfait

Give your child a transparent little cup or bowl so that they can see how it all comes together.

Simply layer granola or muesli, yoghurt and fresh cut fruit like mango, strawberries and banana. Start with some yoghurt, add the rest, cover with yoghurt again and continue until your bowl or cup is full.
