Scared of routine? Here's why it can work!

“Routine was a lifesaver when our twins were born – we started following a set routine straight out of the hospital. My children – even as toddlers – thrive on routine. Knowing what comes next makes life easier for us and them alike and definitely helps to eliminate some of those early evening temper tantrums.” – Christine Kenny, mother of twin boys and blogger at The Kenny Family.

Just like many grown-ups, children thrive with steady routines in their lives. We know it can sometimes be hard when there is so much demanding your attention all at once, but these 3 reasons may persuade you to build some regular schedules for you and your little one:

Structure can make space

Having a sensible routine is less about being strict and more about staying in balance… and helping your child develop important skills and grow confidence. It will also help you build in the time you need for other family relationships, or even yourself!

Knowing what to expect can be comforting

Try to keep the major moments in your child's life predictable, specifically around bed, sleep, feeding and nap times. A child who knows what to expect from her daily routine is likely to be more content and relaxed than one whose schedule changes constantly.

“We used a set sleeping and eating schedule when they were babies which we adjusted as they grew. We also have a very regular bath-time routine, where they wind down, have a bath, brush their teeth, jump in bed for a story and then go to sleep.” – Christine Kenny, mother of twin boys and blogger at The Kenny Family.

Routines can become family traditions

A regular family nap on Saturday afternoons or a mid-morning stroll through the park can turn into something you all enjoy for years to come… and there is nothing like a family tradition for creating wonderful memories.
