Milestones (4-6 months)

Being able to watch your little one grow and develop into a little person is an amazing gift and a wonderful experience for any parent. What should you be looking out for in the fourth to sixth months of their young lives?

Here are some of the most significant developmental milestones most babies are likely to reach at this stage, but don’t worry if yours isn’t always exactly on schedule – there are no hard and fast rules on the timing of these accomplishments.

Month 4

Most babies should be able to:

  • Hold up their head at a 90 degree angle while lying on their stomach.
  • Goo and coo when you talk.
  • Bear weight on both legs.

Some babies may be able to:

  • Grasp a rattle or small toy.
  • Reach out for objects.
  • Roll over.

Month 5

Most babies should be able to:

  • Roll over.
  • Do mini push-ups.
  • Reach out for objects and grasp a rattle or small toy.

Some babies may be able to:

  • Hold their head level with their body when pulled up to sit.
  • Recognize their name.

Month 6

Most babies should be able to:

  • Keep their head level when pulled up to a sitting position.
  • Sit briefly with minimal support.
  • Imitate sounds and facial expressions.
  • Roll back in forth in both directions.

Some babies may be able to:

  • Pull themselves up to a standing position from sitting.
  • Repeat sounds like ma-ma-ma-ma or da-da-da-da.

This is only a guide, of course! Your baby may hit these milestones earlier or later than her peers. If you are worried about her development, contact your health professional.
