All about tummy time

When they reach their fourth or fifth month, most babies are able to lift their head up while lying on their tummy. Some may also be able to roll over onto their tummy on their own. This is, of course, only a rough guide; your baby may hit various developmental milestones earlier or later than her peers. So don’t panic if your child isn’t quite there yet – she’s on her own unique schedule. Play with her and enjoy the amazing journey of learning she’s going through. If you think that she’s not making enough progress, chat to your paediatrician for advice.

Here are some fun activities you can try to entertain baby while encouraging her to spend time on her tummy:

Rock and roll... gently
Place baby over your legs while you’re sitting with one of your legs higher than the other, so that baby’s head is angled slightly upwards. Gently rock your legs so that baby will enjoy the experience.

Happy baby
Lie on your back and place baby on their tummy on your chest. This is a great one for dads to try, too! When baby is happy with this, move them onto the floor.

Face time
Lie on your tummy in front of or next to baby, so they can see your face up close, and have a nice chat. You can also roll a ball to older babies in this position.

Blanket workout
Place a rolled towel or receiving blanket under your baby’s chest, with their elbows under the shoulders. This makes it easier for baby to lift and turn their head.
