MORE WAYS TO GIVE

During these trying times of COVID-19, and many people facing financial challenges as well as little access to food, we’ve curated a list of things you can do to help alleviate hunger in your community. Join our journey to a zero hunger future by 2030.

10 SIMPLE WAYS YOU CAN HELP TO ALLEVIATE HUNGER NEAR YOU

Even with social distancing, we can still connect with our neighbours and offer support to people in need. If you find yourself unable to make a monetary donation, don’t worry, there are many acts of kindness that you can do at home to feed someone for a day.

  1. When preparing dinner, bulk up your meals. Add a few extra ingredients like beans, lentils and vegetables, an extra cup of rice or pasta, to create an additional or bigger meal that you can give to someone in need.
  2. Can’t join a sandwich drive? Then host one. Invite friends and family members to spend a day with you, preparing sandwiches and decorating delicious treats such as cupcakes for people in old-aged homes, safe havens and other NGOs in your community.
  3. Keep biscuit tins and ice cream tubs and use them as containers to donate extra ingredients in or serve meals to your community.
  4. Everyone loves a sweet treat. When baking, make an extra cake, bread, pudding or set aside a yummy slice, healthy snack, muffins or scones - to treat someone else.
  5. We all love a good coffee in the morning. Make an extra cuppa when stirring up one for yourself, and give it to someone like a delivery person or refuse collector to start their day on a great note.
  6. Whip up a good, wholesome pot of soup with beans, lentils, veggies and your very own chicken stock to feed an entire family with a warm meal.
  7. When shopping for bulk deals such as ‘buy any 2 butternuts or two pockets of potatoes’, donate the second bag to someone who needs it more. Better still, if you notice that your family only uses 500 g of your 1 kg veggies intake every month, split the bag after shopping and donate a fresh bag to a local charity. It will help reduce food waste and help a nearby food bank.
  8. If you have a special talent, sell your creations or donate them to an NGO who can sell them at fundraisers and use the money for good.
  9. Soup kitchens are often understaffed so donate your time and volunteer. Also, more often than not, NGOs do not have efficient transport available, so volunteer to collect and deliver food parcels and fresh fruit and veggies from local food banks.
  10.  Simple acts of kindness quickly become second nature so dedicate a day every week where you make a  commitment to make a difference in your community.
