The policy provides cover for items stolen or damaged at your home.
We will compensate you for:
- Loss or damage to the household goods and personal possessions that you and your family members who live with you have inside your home or the buildings at the address on the schedule
- Loss or damage caused by fire, lightning, explosion, malicious damage, impact with your home and outbuildings, falling trees, earthquake, storm, flood, the bursting or overflow of geysers, equipment or pipes, break-in and theft
- Food that deteriorates as a result of a power failure or if your fridge or freezer breaks down
- Washing and garden furniture stolen while in the open at your home
- Your guests’ belongings stolen at your home
- Money stolen from your home, as long as we can see the damage caused by the break-in
- Loss of personal documents, coins and /or a stamp collection
- Lost or damaged locks and keys
- A hole-in-one/bowling full-house on a recognised golf course/bowling green
- Your domestic employee’s belongings
- Medical expenses because of an injury that was caused by a defect in your buildings or by your household pet. We will not compensate you for injuries of a household member, but we will compensate you for your domestic employee’s injuries
- Veterinary expenses if your household pet is injured in a road accident.
- The rent that you have to pay to live elsewhere if you cannot live in your home because it was damaged by anything covered in the policy
- Your belongings if they are in a removal truck and it is involved in an accident. We will also compensate you for damage caused by fire, lightning and explosion while your belongings are in transit or stored in a registered furniture warehouse
- Mirrors and glass that are part of a stove, oven furniture, when broken by accident
- A television set, when broken by accident, but not when it breaks down mechanically or electrically
- Public liability as a householder – if you are legally responsible, we will compensate you if any person other than you or a member of your family who lives with you, or someone who works for you, is injured or dies accidentally
- Tenant’s liability as a householder – if you are legally responsible, we will compensate you for damage to the buildings that you are renting and the landlord’s things fitted to the buildings, caused by anything covered in this policy. We will also cover sanitaryware or fixed panes of glass broken by accident
- Liability to domestic employees – if you are legally responsible we will pay if your domestic employee is injured or died because of an accident that happened at your home while he/she was working.
We will not compensate you for:
- Deeds, bonds, bills of exchange, promissory notes, money, cheques, stamps, documents of any kind, manuscripts, medals and coins, rare books, vehicles or their sound systems, accessories or parts, animals watercraft, trailers or caravans
- Items you insured specifically elsewhere or with you
- Fire damage if your home or buildings have a thatch roof, unless the schedule states that it is covered
- Any damage if the relevant local authority did not approve or would not have approved the construction of the building
- Goods and possessions which you use solely for business, professional or trade purposes
- Borehole and swimming pool equipment
- Items stolen from your garage or outbuildings
- Any loss or damage if more than two unrelated people in your home and it is a commune
- Claims for death, injury or damage which are caused by, or happen from , or are due to you ownership, possessions or use of aircraft, vehicles or watercraft, ownership of buildings, pursuit or exercise of any trade, business or profession, possession of an animal, other than a cat or dog or a horse which you ride for pleasure, use of a weapon.
Portable Possessions
The cover provides for the items you normally carry with you which are lost or damaged
We will compensate you for:
- Loss or damage to your jewellery, clothing and the personal items which you and your family members who live with you normally wear or carry with you. If an a item is worth more than R1 650, it must be specified before we will compensate you for it
- Something that does not fit the description of the items above, but only if we agreed to insure it and it is specified on the schedule
- Bicycles, prescription glasses, contact lenses, cellular phones, borehole and swimming pool equipment, but only if they are specified on the schedule
We will not compensate you for:
- Loss, damage or deterioration because of moth or vermin, cleaning, ironing, repairing or restoring
- Loss or damage to a watch caused by overwinding, leaking batteries, or from immersion in water
- Something that you use solely for business, trade or professional purposes
What to pay when you claim – Excess (es)
Every time something happens for which you claim,you must pay the basic excess. You must also pay any of the additional excesses on the schedule, on top of the basic excess.
